Civic engagement: Encourage and Assist your special learning needs Classmates

I thought to discuss how digital technology can more effectively assist students with special learning needs to learn more effectively in the classroom and other environments. But I find this topic is rather vague. Also, those kinds of discussions in this area have been comprehensive. 

However, relatively little information on how to let society and ordinary students better understand students with special learning needs. That why I decided to focus the topic on how to use digital technology and digital media as a platform to help ordinary students understand and encourage them to explore through digital media to assist students with special education needs. At the same time, this achieves the ISTE standard 7a: Inspire and encourage educators and students to use technology for civic engagement and to address challenges to improve their communities. 

Understanding and Acceptance

Students today are mostly growing up in the digital age. Many difficulties plagued students with special learning needs because of many sophisticated development advancements and breakthroughs, many problems have been solved for these needy students. (Ted, H., & Glaser, W.,2000) However, because many teachers still have not been able to obtain comprehensive training in this technique, these students still cannot be able to receive comprehensive coordination in the classroom. (Ted, H., & Glaser, W.,2000) Since even the teachers have not been able to obtain this knowledge and training, let alone students. Under this circumstance, students with special learning needs may not be able to get comprehensive assistance in class, nor can they be understood by other students. These situations will not bring good results to students’ performance and growth. By thinking about fairness in the learning environment and encouraging educators to provide an equal learning opportunity, this atmosphere and environment need to be improved.

According to Ted, H., & Glaser, W. nearly 60% of the total students in the research department, and have different levels of learning disabilities. I have emotional problems. (Ted, H., & Glaser, W.,2000) Each of the student’s needs and assistance is unique. Teacher experience and skills alone are not enough to fully assist these students in need. Technology can provide effective methods to provide opportunities for these students and help them to practice repeatedly, fully explore, and improve their skills. (Ted, H., & Glaser, W.,2000) 

Digital and Civic engagement

Whether students with special learning needs or ordinary students, these aspects are an indispensable part of their growth and learning. If we can use some open platforms to enable all students to learn through digital technology, we can even encourage them to set up learning plans together by themselves. Also, encourage peers to help each other. On the one hand, there is an opportunity to reduce the pressure on teachers to design different educational programs to help students of different abilities and levels. At the same time, we can increase their attention to society and the community by encouraging students to participate in paying attention to and serving students in need. And through technology and digital conferences, it is an effective and quick way for students to invest in and improve their engagement. 

Although there is no very accurate data to prove that the Internet and digital media can improve the civic engagement of young people. The information provided by the internet and digital media has indeed enriched young people’s understanding of society and related matters around them. But according to Martens & Hobbs, students participating in the Digital and Media Literacy Programs will have a higher chance of participating in discussions on social issues than students not participating in such Programs. (Martens, H., & Hobbs, R., 2015) At the same time, Martens & Hobbs suggest that: ‘By improving young people’s Media literacy analysis skills, Media knowledge, internet use, and information-use motives.’  effectively improve their civic engagement interest. (Martens, H., & Hobbs, R., 2015)

Provide a foundation for feasible solutions

Therefore, I have an attempt, which is to let students understand the different special learning needs through the Internet and analyze it with the help of teachers. Then let students propose different possibilities to assist students with different needs. The second part is to understand how different technologies such as AI, word processing, and prediction software, can help students with different special learning needs. Students can learn about the advantages and areas of improvement of different digital applications through hands-on trials, and share their opinions on social media. In this process, students can learn how to conduct positive analysis and comment with responsibility and conscience to provide positive improvement programs. In addition, through research, data collection, and data sharing, students can share their respective concerns about different learning and special learning needs on digital media. They can also initiate some activities and possible topics that focus on special learning needs through social media to encourage society and other students to care about and provide methods to assist the students with needed. 

 Social media platforms and digital technology can be used positively to allow students to participate in and care for the assistance of students around them, on the one hand, students can effectively practice different aspects of how to practice the knowledge and values they have learned in Digital and Media Literacy Programs. It can also make good use of network resources to enable students to actively explore the advantages of different students around them and learn good and positive communication skills. Through these experiences, can increase the attention of their communities and Civic engagement.
